'RS2000 Escort'

I bought this car to satisfy a childhood dream of owning a sporty RS Escort, this one came partly restored looking pretty good and nearly working condition, the dealer said he would service it to cure a 'misfire' well he didn't as it turns out. I paid for the car and my wife (formerly girlfriend) walked 3 miles across the fields to pick it up and drove it to my work in Andover left it for me to drive home, that's what you call a loving wife. Driving the car home the misfire returned and got worse and worse with the car nearly stopping entirley, with the car at home I found water in the fuel filter so come the weekend I eventually got 2 litres of water out of the system and it's a pain of a job.

I serviced just about everything including the brakes and this 1970's car is the only car I've found to have true dual circuit brakes, trying to bleed the brakes I found I got one good pump before the peddle went firm again, this turned out to be a shuttle valve that operates when one system leaks; well it works. How many cars have you bled the brakes only to have the peddle flop limply to the floor?? Where is you second part of the dual circuit brakes?? Bizarre!

We started visiting car shows in earnest with this car eagerly showing it but not winning any prizes because to competition was just too good but it was fun anyway.

With the 280 Brooklands Capri and the RS2000 safely tucked up we went on holiday to Kenya only to have two storms arrive one after each other at home. When we arrived home we found lots of tiles gone from the roof, some on nextdoor's roof and the rest on top of the RS, Nnnooooo!!! The 280 had survived OK. The RS looked very sorry and had no upward looking panel undamaged, the windscreen was smashed, roof, bonnet, boot and both front wings, so now it was insurance time and I was expecting the worse but Footman James and Co were just the best and paid £4000 in repair bills, now the RS was looking really good; still didn't win any prizes though.

When time came to sell we had just the most embarrasing time, it goes like this,

I placed the car for sale on the internet and had one response from a guy, we exchanged details and I sent him pictures and he wanted to see the car so I said I was free next Saturday, well it went silent and I didn't hear from him again. Meanwhile I had a phone call from somebody else about it who I also sent pictures, these new people wanted to see the car but I said someone else was interested but I hadn't heard from him since last weekend and I said if he doesn't contact by Friday they could come Saturday to see the car. Friday came and still nothing from the first guy so we made arrangements for the new people to come from Essex to view the car on Saturday lunchtime, then during Saturday morning they phoned to say they were stuck in traffic and wouldn't be there until 1 o'clock, that's fine I said. 1 o'clock arrives and the door bell goes "I'm here to see the RS2000" he says, we do the looking over it and the test drive thing and he aggrees to buy it at the asking price, leaves a £250 deposit and says he will be back next weekend to pick it up. I excitedly go inside to tell the wife that it's sold when the door bell goes again, I open the door to be faced with somebody asking to see the RS2000, "what? I've ust sold it" I said "who are you?" we are from Essex and have been speaking over the phone, I was totally gobsmaked and they were very angry having driven from Essex. The guy whose deposit I had taken was very ammused when I told him as he picked up the car the following week. Now I make a point of getting people's names when speaking to them!!!
